Social Studies
• We begin with a review of geography and then cover from the time people crossed the land bridge in Asia to westward expansion.
• Students engage in hands on, exploratory units that allow students to experience history, make connections between the past and present and develop their research, writing and communication skills.
Science Units
1. Energy, Motion, Models and Design
•An inquiry-based, hands on unit in which students will learn there are many types of energy (light, sound, electrical, magnetic and heat).
• Students will learn energy can be transferred and conserved.
• Students also learn the habits of mind of a scientist and engineer.
2. Ecology, Ecosystems, Water
• Students learn about ecosystems, biodiversity, the web of life, interdependency, food chains, pollution, and upsetting the stability of an ecosystem.
• Students engage in active learning through field trips and visits from Drumlin Farm
• Students complete a case study of the ecosystem on Case Campus
Homework Policy
• Assigned nightly Monday-Thursday although students may need to work on a long term projects over the weekend. I also encourage reading on the weekend!
• 30 minutes of reading
• 30 minutes of math
• up to 30 minutes of "other" work (science, social studies, writing)
• weekly vocabulary work
